Dragons’ Den star urges employers to offer first aid training

3 Apr

I just picked this up from the CIPD newsletter, its great to see high profile people getting behind the push to promote first aid, sadly though Duncan had to experience a need before he took action. We often neglect the need to train our staff and children basic first aid which really can make a difference, why as it doesn’t take long and is a life long skill?. Corporate Health as well as providing First aid training to businesses across the UK have set up a scheme offering local schools free first aid training for their students. Does your business have up to date first aiders?

Entrepreneur Duncan Bannatyne is calling on businesses to train more employees in first aid after his own health scare at work last year.

The health club owner and star of BBC TV’s Dragons’ Den was experiencing severe chest pains when he was found by his secretary, who used her first aid skills until the ambulance arrived.

I realised then that there are a lot of first aid at work situations,” Bannatyne told People Management. “All my health clubs have trained staff but I had never had any training, so I organised a session for myself and nine others at head office.”

Now one in eight employees at his business headquarters is trained in first aid – far above the legal obligation for a workforce of its size.

First aiders are a requirement in all workplaces

Bannatyne urged employers to consider investing in first aid training for extra staff, despite the tough financial times. “It’s well worth it if you can save someone’s life,” he said.

Last year, there were 170 fatalities in the workplace and thousands more injuries, according to official figures from the Health and Safety Executive.

Corporate Health a charity committed to health and well being of employees offers a full range of HSE approved first aid courses both Nationally and from our Medical centre in Slough. We are competitively priced and will always beat the price of the two major First aid providers.
